Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, at Long Beach in CA. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise when she was a girl. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote the cause of activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially aware and taught her to say something through the art of. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has lived for many generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay was a student at the college when she started to get fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish in the house of a member of the jury. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999.
